Safety should always be a top-of-mind concern in anything we do. This is true for something as automatic and obvious as riding a bicycle, and for something as outside-the-box and "daring" as storm chasing.
Water safety gets a fair amount of attention. Consider how many time you have heard a message to call our attention to the importance to act safe around water, to never go swimming without a companion, to always wear a life vest when boating. Even in our backyard, we are reminded to make sure the swimming pool is separated from the rest of the yard with a pool safety fence around the pool or the yard to keep children and animals from falling in.
But what do we do withour hot tubs? They also are filled with water. They too can drown someone. How do we protect people's lives with our hot tubs?
Hot tub safety begins with a secure hot tub cover. Covers are reasonably heavy and fit in place, so they can protect against most unintended encounters. They are also sturdy enough that even jumping on them will pose no risk, nor will it damage them, either.
Hot tub covers keep "things" out of your hot tub. "Things" include much that is obvious, for example neighbourhood children who wander along, even teenagers out on desperately waging war against boredom. "Things" also include wild animals - foxes, skunks, rabbits, deer, mice, etc. - and we can't forget the pets, such as dogs and cats (and who knows...maybe a roaming zoo animal just to add an exotic touch to this list). "Things" also include flying insects, spiders, various crawling bugs, leaves, twigs, bird droppings (yuck!) and who-knows-what-else might fall into your tub.
It's Not Enough To Cover Up
But covering your spa is not enough on its own. Locking it down is important, too. A cover can easily be lifted - much harder to remove is a locked down cover. We are saddened to hear the story of a firefighter from McCutchanville named Nathan Kuehne. While visiting a friend for an overnight stay - overnight because he had consumed much too much alcohol to drive back home - he decided to enjoy the soothing warmth of the hot tub. At 27 years of age, that was the last time he would ever take a dip in a hot tub again.
In fact, we hear almost weekly of a hot tub drowning. Many of these drownings could be prevented if people used common-sense safety precautions. Water can be dangerous even when it is up only to our knees.. It's a no-brainer to play it safe, both to protect ourselves and to protect other people and animals.
Let me offer another excellent reason to lock down your hot tub cover: storms. Yes, in extreme storm conditions a hot tub cover can achieve lift-off. This might not happen more than once every year or two, but just imagine the damage of a hot tub cover tumbling through your patio doors.
So take the time and make the effort to secure everybody's safety and lock down your hot tub cover. It makes common sense to do so.
